Disney Plus subscribers will have a lot to look forward to in May, as some of the best movies on the streaming platform will be available for their viewing pleasure. Despite an already impressive catalog of films, Disney Plus continues to expand its offerings across various genres, with recent months featuring numerous Star Wars and Marvel-related projects.
In fact, the platform has added several of the latest MCU Phase 4 movies to its library. While there may not be a huge influx of new movies in May, fans can still expect some exciting superhero additions to the platform. Along with a few Disney Plus Original Movies, there are more superhero flicks than usual being added to Disney Plus this month.
1. Spider-Man Trilogy (2002-2007)
You can now stream the Spider-Man trilogy on Disney Plus. Before the character was incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he starred in his own series of movies. The trilogy, which kicked off in 2002, starred Tobey Maguire as the young superhero and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson. Fans were pleasantly surprised when the Spider-Man movies were added to Disney Plus in April, given that the platform typically only features content produced by Disney or studios owned by Disney. The addition of the trilogy suggests that negotiations about the Spider-Man properties with Sony are ongoing and that more Spider-Man content may be added to Disney Plus in the future.
2. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Disney Plus subscribers can now stream the first of the two Andrew Garfield-led Spider-Man movies, which were released by Sony a decade after Tobey Maguire’s portrayal of the web-slinging hero. In these films, Garfield stars as Spider-Man opposite Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy. Despite being older than their high school student characters, Garfield and Stone deliver convincing performances that capture the teenage aspect of the storyline. Garfield’s portrayal of Peter Parker has long been praised for this characteristic. While fans may hope to see a crossover with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, they will have to wait a little longer to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home on Disney Plus.
3. Crater (2023)
Starting May 12, Disney Plus subscribers can stream Crater, which is a Disney Plus original film. Unlike the majority of May’s movie additions, which are considered “library additions” and were produced prior to 2023, Crater is a new and unique offering. The film has been described as a lunar version of The Goonies. The plot revolves around Caleb (played by Isaiah Russel-Bailey), who has spent his entire life on a lunar mining colony. After his father’s passing, Caleb learns that he and his friends (Billy Barratt, Orson Hong, and Thomas Boyce) will be transferred to another colony on a distant planet. In an attempt to fulfill his father’s dream, Caleb and his friends, along with a new colonist from Earth (McKenna Grace), embark on an adventure to explore a crater that his father had always talked about. The group steals a rover, and the movie follows their thrilling journey.
4. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Starting May 12, subscribers can finally watch the first movie in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy on Disney Plus. Although Holland made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, his solo Spider-Man films were not available on the streaming platform due to their production by Sony. In this movie, viewers can see Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker beyond his initial excitement of becoming a superhero, as the film delves into his struggles as a teenager and his desire to be a good Spider-Man. Additionally, Michael Keaton delivers a captivating performance as the Vulture, a villain who has used alien technology to build a criminal empire and also happens to be the father of one of Peter’s classmates.
5. Venom (2018)
Coming to Disney Plus on May 12, Venom is the first solo movie for one of the beloved villains, and sometimes heroes, of Spider-Man comics. Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes the host to an alien symbiote after a ship carrying the creatures crashes on Earth. The symbiote gives him superhuman abilities, but also a taste for human flesh. Despite not being part of the MCU, Venom’s arrival on Disney Plus marks a new deal between Sony and Disney, and sets the stage for more villainous action in the Spider-Man universe. The movie’s sequel, however, is not yet available on the streaming platform.
6. Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
Coming to Disney Plus on May 17 is the third installment of the Ant-Man franchise, which was recently released in theaters. Along with the first two movies in the series, this movie also becomes available on the platform. The storyline is expanded to the Quantum Realm, and it features Jonathon Majors in a more extensive role as Kang, compared to his brief appearance in the first season of Loki.
7. Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)
In April, Disney Plus didn’t have many new original movies, but the most anticipated one was Peter Pan & Wendy. This live-action remake of the animated classic from Disney updates some of the problematic elements of the original story. The movie premiered during the 70th anniversary of the original Peter Pan film. The cast includes Alexander Molony as Peter Pan, Ever Anderson as Wendy, and Yara Shahidi as Tinkerbell. If you missed the premiere on April 28, you can watch it on demand.
