Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, has cemented his dominance in the MonsterVerse by defeating eight Titans so far, with the exception of Mechagodzilla. In comparison to his Toho counterpart who has secured victories over more than a dozen kaiju in 30 years of cinematic history, the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla has a shorter record.
However, the Legendary version has already accomplished a lot with just three movie appearances. Although the Toho Godzilla has beaten multiple foes, including King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Gigan, the MonsterVerse’s version has made its mark by taking down eight Titans. Despite having a shorter lifespan, Legendary Godzilla has earned his title through impressive victories.
1. The Male MUTO
In the 2014 movie “Godzilla,” the King of the Monsters faced a daunting challenge when he confronted two MUTOs. Initially, battling both of them simultaneously proved too much for him to handle. However, the situation changed when he separated the pair. Godzilla’s fight with the male MUTO was a different story without its mate to assist. Although the creature’s agility and flight posed a challenge, Godzilla unleashed a blast of atomic breath for the first time on screen and strategically hit the MUTO with his tail, ultimately leading to its demise.
2. The Female MUTO
The battle that followed proved without a doubt that Godzilla was more powerful than the MUTOs. After defeating the first MUTO, Godzilla saved Aaron taylor-johnson’s character from the female MUTO, who was larger and stronger than her flying counterpart. Despite the female MUTO being a challenging adversary, Godzilla quickly dispatched her with a move now known as the “Kiss of Death.” This scene, where Godzilla used a blast of atomic breath to vanquish the threat without engaging in a proper rematch, put to rest any lingering doubts about his dominance.
3. MUTO Prime
Although she never made an appearance in live-action, MonsterVerse’s fourth MUTO was introduced in Legendary’s universe. In the MonsterVerse tie-in comic “Godzilla: Aftershock,” MUTO Prime, the strongest member of her species, battled Godzilla. The event took place after the 2014 movie but before the showdown with Ghidorah. MUTO Prime, who was responsible for killing the Godzilla ancestor discovered in the Philippines, threatened humans, and Godzilla intervened to save them. Despite her strength, MUTO Prime couldn’t overpower the present-day version of Godzilla, who ultimately defeated her with a head stomp.
4. Ghidorah
In the history of the MonsterVerse, Godzilla has defeated his greatest enemy at least three times. Their first encounter took place thousands of years ago in Antarctica, where Godzilla emerged victorious, leading to Ghidorah being frozen in ice. After his awakening in present times, Ghidorah and Godzilla engaged in an inconclusive battle in Antarctica before clashing again in the ocean. As an inhabitant of the sea, Godzilla had the upper hand and managed to tear off one of Ghidorah’s heads.
If not for the military’s use of the Oxygen Destroyer, Ghidorah’s defeat would have been final. However, their interference made a third and final battle possible. With a power boost from an electrical grid, Ghidorah almost succeeded in avenging his previous defeats, but this time it was Godzilla who received outside help. Thanks to a timely enhancement from Mothra, Godzilla was able to unleash two nuclear pulse attacks, obliterating Ghidorah’s body and ensuring his enemy’s final defeat.
5. Scylla
In the aftermath of King of the Monsters, a new Titan was quietly introduced in the MonsterVerse, who would later fight Godzilla offscreen. In the movie’s final scene, five Titans were seen bowing down to Godzilla, recognizing his dominance after defeating Ghidorah. However, in between films, one of these Titans changed their attitude. In the tie-in comic Godzilla: Dominion, Scylla, a six-legged insect Titan, challenged Godzilla by putting aside her fear and succumbing to her hunger for nuclear energy. Unsurprisingly, Scylla was no match for the King of the Monsters and quickly submitted to his power after a few blows. Despite her brief defiance, Scylla ultimately recognized Godzilla’s superiority.
6. Amhuluk
In Dominion, Godzilla had to confront uprisings from three of his Titan subjects. The second was Amhuluk, a swamp monster with vine-like limbs. While not physically shown in King of the Monsters, his name appeared on a monitor, indicating that he was one of the Titans awakened by Ghidorah. Although he appeared to follow the others in pledging allegiance to Godzilla, he crossed a line in Dominion by engaging in a territorial dispute with Behemoth over the Amazon Rainforest, which led to Godzilla intervening on Behemoth’s behalf. Despite putting up some initial resistance, Amhuluk surrendered relatively quickly.
7. Tiamat
Scylla and Amhuluk proved to be no match for Godzilla, but Tiamat posed a real challenge. Like Amhuluk, Tiamat was one of the Titans that went missing in King of the Monsters. In Godzilla: Dominion, Tiamat was introduced as a massive sea serpent residing in an underground lair. When Godzilla arrived on the scene, a dramatic underwater showdown ensued. Despite Godzilla’s natural advantage in the water, Tiamat held her own and even seemed to be winning until the fight was moved onto land. There, Godzilla was able to force Tiamat into submission.
8. Kong
Legendary’s MonsterVerse saw the King of Skull Island join the list of Titans defeated by Godzilla in the franchise’s fourth installment. In their first fight, Kong was clearly no match for Godzilla in the ocean. However, their second encounter provided a greater challenge for the Titan Alpha. Using his agility and atomic breath-powered axe, Kong frustrated Godzilla until he lost his cool. Despite this, Godzilla eventually regained the upper hand and unleashed a brutal beating on his ancient rival. The scene of Godzilla standing triumphantly atop Kong with his foot on his enemy’s chest solidified his status as the true King of the Monsters.
